Free social IT asset disposal
Edinburgh Remakery is a social ITAD (sITAD) provider. Like any ITAD provider, we securely dispose of your unwanted computers, laptops, phones and tablets. The difference is what happens next.
We repair and refurbish around 80% of the equipment we receive, and a large share of it is gifted to disadvantaged groups across Scotland. The rest is sold at affordable prices to fund our work, and nothing that could be reused goes to landfill.
What we accept
Computers, laptops, phones, tablets, servers, networking equipment, monitors and printers.
How it works
Contact us
Use the enquiry form or email tech@edinburghremakery.org.uk with details of the equipment. We'll reply within 48 hours.
Evaluation
Our technicians assess what can be repaired, refurbished, reused or responsibly recycled.
Collection or drop-off
We collect at a time that suits you, or you drop off at 13A Newkirkgate Centre, EH6 6AD. You can also courier devices at your own cost, if they're already wiped and BIOS-unlocked.
Data wipe
Every device is wiped to IEEE 2883-2022 and NIST 800-88 standards. You receive a Secure Data Wipe Certificate and Waste Transfer Note for all equipment.
Reuse
Refurbished equipment is gifted to people facing digital exclusion, or sold in our shop. Anything else is recycled responsibly.
Impact report
We show you how your equipment was processed and used in the community, including tonnage diverted from landfill where possible.
All devices must be BIOS-unlocked and removed from any remote management (MDM) platform. Devices that aren't will be charged at £25 each, so check with your IT team first.
Secure data destruction
We use a combination of the IEEE 2883-2022 and NIST 800-88 standards, which use cryptographic erasure so all previously stored data is destroyed and can't be recovered.
Every device is covered by a Secure Data Wipe Certificate, provided free, so you have a clear record for GDPR and internal audit.
Any hard drive that can't be wiped is destroyed.
Where your equipment goes
Through our Tech Gifting Programme, your old IT supports families in digital poverty, refugees and asylum seekers, school children and jobseekers, and community groups and charities.

If you have a busy space and room for a box but no budget to sponsor one, let us know. We'll ask our sponsors whether they'd like to move a box to you.
Their brand gets seen by more people, and more old tech comes out of drawers. It depends on which boxes are free, so we can't promise one straight away, but we'll keep you in mind.
What can go in the box
Yes please
Not in the box
Monitors under 21″, printers of any kind, and household electricals like kettles, toasters, lamps, hairdryers and straighteners.
Common questions
How much space does the box need?
It's about 1.5m (4.8ft) tall and 70cm wide. We'll send exact dimensions so you can check your space before it arrives.
How often is it emptied?
Whenever you need it. You hold a set of keys, and when the box is nearly full you get in touch and our driver comes to empty it.
Is donated data safe?
Yes. Every device goes through the same certified data destruction as our IT disposal service, and drives that can't be wiped are destroyed. We can send you our full procedure.
What happens to the tech?
Our technicians repair everything they can. Refurbished devices are sold to fund our work, and some are gifted to people in digital poverty. Usable parts are reused and the rest is recycled responsibly.
What if something is too big for the box?
Only keep large items if you have proper storage, as anything left on the floor is a trip hazard. Otherwise they can be dropped off at our hub in Leith.
Can we sponsor a box without having it on site?
Yes. Silver and Gold boxes carry your logo, so they promote you wherever they're placed. We'll find a home for it, and we're open to your suggestions.
Hosting a Tech Donation Box in our office was one of the simplest and most effective steps we've taken to support our ESG goals. Our staff were proud to contribute their old devices, knowing they would be refurbished and given a second life in the hands of someone who truly needs it.
