Boro and Sashiko Mending, Thursday 5th October 2023
Learn Boro and Sashiko, the Japanese Art of Mending
So many cultures have their own unique way of mending or decorating textiles, and Boro Mending and Sashiko Embroidery are two such techniques originating in Japan. This technique involves using the Sashiko stitch to repair and breathe new life into clothing and textiles in a simple, decorative way, and the repetitive movement is a practice often used in mindfulness practices.
In this workshop, you’ll be shown how to use Sashiko and Boro stitching in various ways – as patches to mend holes in garments or as a way to upcycle and decorate your clothing, creating beautiful embroidery designs on jeans, jackets, shirts, shorts, skirts and more.
This is a hand sewing class, so there’s no need to be a whizz on a sewing machine! You will be able to learn the techniques and leave feeling inspired to continue fixing and rejuvenating your favourite pieces at home. You’ll be given a range of stencils to choose from to outline your Sashiko design on your garment or fabric, and our tutor will give you design suggestions on how to layer up patches to achieve an authentic Japanese Boro effect. Expert guidance and tuition will be given every step of the way.
This workshop is suitable for ages 14+. All materials will be provided, and we will have plenty of fabrics for you to practice and use the techniques on.
Book your space today and learn a new creative skill to last a lifetime!
