Kids Weekly Hand Knitting Club (for ages 6-12), Friday 17th January-27th March 2020
Welcoming the newest addition to our fantastic knitting courses – Hand Knitting for Boys and Girls aged 6-12 years old!
These classes will run during term time every Friday 1:00-3:00pm, starting on 17th January and running for 10 weeks (excluding the February mid-term break) with the final session taking place on 27th March.
Hand knitting is not only proven to enhance hand eye coordination, concentration, and math skills, but also helps creates a sense of achievement and confidence by allowing your child to learn valuable, creative skills and make their own items!
We will run a structured yet participant led curriculum, starting with very basic knitting skills and stitches – such as cast on and off, knit and pearl to create a ribbed or striped effect scarf – before progressing onto more complex projects such as making hats and fingerless gloves, keeping your child’s curiosity peaked with a bit of challenge thrown into the mix! We will also experiment with crochet and will cover pom-pom making across the sessions.
Other items that will be made across the weeks will include bags, hats or caps, Easter-themed creatures, snoods, and clothes for a favourite teddy, all the time giving your child the freedom to suggest and make any items they are keen to create!
A fantastic introduction to knitting in a warm and welcoming space at the Edinburgh Remakery, these sessions are perfect for any and all skill levels and no previous knowledge or experience are needed to join.
About the facilitator:
Maija Nygren is a knitwear designer with a passion for education.
Maija believes that people have a necessity to be creative, yet this is often overlooked due to our busy lives. Through making our own clothing or other items, we gain a great sense of achievement, learn to value clothing and understand the effort that has gone into creating them.
Maija graduated from Heriot-Watt School of Textiles with a BA(Hons) and MA in Knitwear (2018). Maija lectures at DJCAD, Dundee University and works as a freelance designer and educator for Almaborealis Ltd, promoting circular economy principals in fashion and textiles.
