Join the Edinburgh Remakery board of trustees

We are currently recruiting for three new members of the Edinburgh Remakery board.

The Edinburgh Remakery is an award-winning environmental social enterprise committed to diverting waste from landfill, building a stronger community, and promoting a culture of repair and reuse. Since 2016 we have ben repairing, refurbishing and recycling what others send to landfill, and we pass these repair skills onto others within the Edinburgh community through education. We are small but have a wide impact; annually diverting 60 tonnes of waste from landfill and educating over 1,400 people in repair and re-use skills. Through our refurbished IT scheme, we have been a critical part of reducing the digital divide during lockdown and beyond for hundreds across the city, whilst preventing e-waste going to landfill.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people with an enthusiasm for repair and reuse, Green issues and sustainable business. The Edinburgh Remakery is seeking board members who can help us thrive, and advance Green Recovery in the city of Edinburgh at this critical time.

Board posts available include a new chair of the board on a rotating annual basis, and treasurer. We are especially interested in people with backgrounds in sustainability, education, charity finance, HR and retail. Please find additional information regarding the chair of the board post here.

The Edinburgh Remakery always welcomes applications from people with a wide range of experiences, skills and enthusiasm. We are also committed to being flexible to accommodate the best applicants from all walks of life. We’d especially love to see more applicants from young people (16-25) so our board can better reflect the community that we serve.

You would be joining the Board at an exciting time for the Remakery: we have ambitions of becoming the number one place for businesses to dispose of their e-waste, while growing our education model of workshops, training and volunteering opportunities.

What is the commitment?

We normally meet once every two months for a board meeting in Edinburgh (although we do have an option to join through Zoom). There may be special projects and activities to contribute your skills to, as well as normal issues for discussion at board meetings. We anticipate a commitment of around 4 hours a month including meeting commitments, and an annual fun away day for board and staff.

Why should you consider this?

You would be joining a strong and effective board of a resilient and practical organisation that makes a difference to the Green Economy in a real and tangible way. Our board provides direction and leadership, and you can make a real impact on helping people reduce their waste, supporting vulnerable members of our community, and help with the climate emergency.

As well as serving the Edinburgh Remakery, you would also gain valuable experience and networks in the wider reuse and repair sector, with opportunities to add new skills to your personal and professional development.

As normal for charities, this is a voluntary unpaid position but we can reimburse reasonable expenses (including childcare), and we provide training and fun away-days for all board members.
