This 4-week course will be running every Wednesday, 6:30-8:30pm, from 11th November – 2nd December 2020.
All materials will be provided, plus all-important tea and coffee to fuel your creativity. Please feel free to bring along your own sewing machine to learn on if you have one, as well as any fabrics, materials and clothes you’d like to work on. Otherwise, we have everything you need here.
Complete newbies welcome! Each week we will take you through a new process step by step, teaching you new skills and techniques which you’ll build on across the weeks. Minimum age for this workshop is 14 years old.
Dates and further details of all 4 workshops can be found below:
Day One – How to Use a Sewing Machine:
This first lesson will introduce you to a sewing machine, taking you through each part of the machine and their functions, as well as the various settings which are common on modern machines. We will teach you how to thread a machine, and how to change a bobbin and machine needle as and when needed. You’ll then have time to practice machine sewing with various settings to get a real feel for it.
Day Two – Zips and Button Holes
In this second class, we will teach you how to add zips and button holes to various projects including clothing and homewares such as cushion covers. These are two techniques which people often have trouble with so you’ll have the whole session to learn and practice how to do this until your fully confident.
Day Three – Alterations. Participants are invited to bring along their own clothing if they wish, or can work on pieces provided by us.
In our third session together, you’ll learn how to make a hem for both trousers and tops to finish off your clothing neatly and professionally, whether you’re altering your own clothes, repairing hems which have come undone, or making new items of clothing. We’ll then show you how to use various techniques to mend holes, including dry felting, hand sewing and applique.
Day Four – Project
In our final session together, you’ll be shown how to make your very own tote bag to take home with you. You can bring along your own fabric to work with, or choose from our range of fabrics at the Remakery. We will show you how to use general paper patterns and the meaning of the symbols which are commonly found on these patterns. You’ll then use this knowledge to make your tote bag using a paper pattern model provided by us.
This workshop will be taking place at Granton Hub, Madelvic House, Granton Park Avenue, Edinburgh EH5 1HS. Madelvic House is just off the cycle path, has a dedicated car park and is a 2 minute walk from the number 19, 16 and 200 bus stop. We will be using their large studio space which will allow for social distancing and have implemented all health and safety measures to ensure your safety and comfort. More details of these measures will be emailed out to confirmed attendees the week before the workshop start date.
