4-Week Book Binding, Monday 5th – Monday 26th September 2022

In this workshop series participants will make 4 different books that can be used as sketch or notebooks, journals or to keep some treasured mementos.

Participants will learn to create a range of book binding techniques that focus on book binding stitches and other alternative, non-paste methods. The workshops are for anybody who wants to have some fun while learning a new skill and re-using unwanted or second-hand material. Each of the workshops can be attended separately – or why not book all 4 sessions?

Session 1 – Monday 5th September:

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE STAB BINDING 
This book will provide perfect pockets for keeping wee treasures, tickets and other ephemera. Participants will learn about Japanese book structures, making pages from used envelopes. Then each book will be finished with beautiful traditional Japanese Stab Binding.
Learning goals: accurate measuring, assembling, designing, traditional Japanese book structures, traditional Japanese Stab Binding, decorating, re-using of material.

Session 2 – Monday 12th September:

UNIQUE NOTEBOOK WITH A TWIST
Participants will learn to create a flexible and useful book for all occasions, using a plastic shopping bag as binding material. Play with a variety of closures to finish the book and make it into a unique and personal treasure.
Learning goals: accurate measuring, assembling, designing, book binding without sewing (using cut up plastic shopping bags), decorating, re-using of material.

Session 3 – Monday 19th September:

PIANO HINGE BOOK 

In this workshop participants will make their own display book, perfect for presenting small drawings, ephemera and other treasures. This book has the potential to be personalised to a great extent by adding of pockets and using unusual items for the piano hinge spine.

Learning goals: accurate measuring, assembling, designing, piano hinge construction (use of skewers, pencils, twigs or driftwood sticks etc) hand sewing, decorative book finish with fabric scraps, re-using of other material.

Session 4 – Monday 26th September:

COPTIC BINDING
In this workshop the emphasis is on sewing techniques. Coptic stitching across the spine and decorative sewing on the cover will make this a beautifully finished, one-off journal or sketchbook.
Learning goals: accurate measuring, assembling, designing, book binding techniques, Coptic stitch, decorative techniques, re-using of material such as various papers, envelopes and packaging card.

Terms and conditions

Age group
Minors need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian unless the event description states otherwise.
If the person accompanying would like to join the activity we invite you to consider to buy yourself a ticket too in order to support our costs and we have an accurate number of participants.

Location
This workshop is taking place at our new premises at Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. We are located on the Ground Floor at the North end of the shopping centre opposite Waterstones. There is free parking outside, as well as lots of public transport links which you can find more information about here.

Refunds and Cancellations
Tickets will be refunded if:
* The event is cancelled
* The event changes location and you cannot attend
* If you have been charged a booking fee this cannot be refunded as the booking service has still been provided

Unfortunately we can not offer refunds if:

* You can no longer attend the event due to personal circumstances
* You have changed your mind about wanting to go to the event
* The event is rescheduled at a later date

In some circumstances, you will be offered instead a voucher or to transfer the ticket to the next available date
